Background
Saffron Zomer is MASSPIRG’s Campus Program Director. Saffron is originally from Australia and graduated from Monash University with a liberal arts and law degree. While studying and practicing law Saffron was a volunteer attorney for the Victorian Women’s Legal Service, Springvale Community Legal Service and the Environmental Defender’s office, where she helped advise and represent individuals and community groups who could not pay for legal assistance on criminal, family law or environmental/urban planning law issues. She also enjoyed a brief stint at the Victorian Environment Protection Authority prosecuting operators of unsafe landfills. To pay the bills, Saffron practiced in personal injury litigation for a couple of years before realizing that the legal profession was not her preferred method of changing the world, and decided to become a full time activist. With MASSPIRG Saffron splits her time between Beacon Hill, the Boston office, and campuses around the state. She is the author of “Exposing the Textbooks Industry: How Publishers’ Pricing Tactics Drive up the Cost of College Textbooks”, and has helped the student chapters of MASSPIRG run effective campaigns to combat global warming, make higher education affordable, serve the homeless, and promote civic engagement.
