December
20, 2007 – Consumer and scientific groups commended the House of
Representatives’ passage of H.R. 4040, the Consumer Product Safety Modernization
Act yesterday. Consumers Union, Consumer
Federation of America, the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group, and the
Union of Concerned Scientists released the following
statement:
“We
appreciate the hard work that has gone into crafting H.R. 4040, the Consumer
Product Safety Modernization Act, and thank the House Energy and Commerce
Committee and the House Leadership for their prompt action. Our current product
safety system is in dire need of comprehensive reform, and this bill represents
the first concrete effort to help protect consumers while addressing industry
concerns.” MASSPIRG also commended Rep. Ed Markey (Mass.), for several
attempts to strengthen the bill in committee. “MASSPIRG will continue to work
with consumer champion Ed Markey to add his important fixed-site amusement park
safety and product recall database amendments to the final legislation,” said
Janet Domenitz, Executive Director of MASSPIRG, “We are disappointed that the
committee leadership successfully urged a no vote on these and other critical
amendments.”
