The Honorable Rush Holt
1019 Longworth House Office Building
Washington D.C. 20515
Dear Congressman Holt,
We
write to thank you for your leadership on election reform at the outset
of the 110th Congress with the introduction of the Voter Confidence and
Increased Accessibility Act of 2007 (H.R. 811) and to let you know that
USPIRG supports your efforts to improve integrity of our elections by
mandating voter verified paper trails.
USPIRG applauds this
common sense reform measure that will help to ensure the accuracy of
our elections and restore confidence among Americans in the election
process. Problems arising in the last election not only cast doubt on
the integrity of our elections, they add to a growing cynicism that
dampens involvement and participation in the political process.
The
successful experience in the growing number of states that have paper
records for electronic voting machines lends credible evidence that a
targeted reform such as verified voting with a paper trail is a simple
and yet important step for assuring and re-establishing the faith of
the American people in our political process.
We look forward to
working with you on this issue and are encouraged to see widespread and
bipartisan support for the measure. I will be sure to follow up with
your office to discuss ways in which we might be able to assist.
Sincerely,
Gary Kalman
