National Popular Vote

Most of us are taught in our civics classes that every vote counts. But upon closer look, the election of the President of the United States does not work that way. Overview

The American system of representative democracy relies on an engaged citizenry and fair representation, and yet voter turnout is lower than it should be, voting is too often difficult, inaccurate or unverifiable, and in many states the districts themselves are drawn by elected officials to benefit themselves or their party. That’s why MASSPIRG is fighting to make verifiable, high quality voting machines the standard. We’re registering tens of thousands of young and low-income new voters across the country. And we’re supporting measures that will ensure a fairer way to draw political districts.

Highlight

Call your representative and senator to urge action on HB 646 SB 446

The Joint Committee on Election Laws held a hearing on May 30 to consider the MASSPIRG endorsed Election Day Registration Bill. The room was packed with hundreds of supporters; including Lt Gov Tim Murray, Secretary of State William Galvin, the League of Women Voters, and many more. But the bill will sit in committee unless and until the Legislature is prompted by public support---please call your elected officials today and urge passage of this bill.
